Οι New York Times δημοσίευσαν τις καλύτερες ταινίες σύμφωνα με τους ίδιους του 21ου αιώνα περιλαμβάνοντας ταινίες από όλες τις γωνιές του κόσμου.

Στην πρώτη εικοσάδα, επτά ταινίες είναι μη αγγλόφωνες παραγωγές: οι «Θέλω και τη μαμά σου» (Μεξικό, Αλφόνσο Κουαρόν, 18η θέση), «Τίγρης και δράκος» (Ταϊβάν/ Κίνα, Ανγκ Λι, 16η θέση), «Η πόλη του Θεού» (Βραζιλία, Φερνάντο Μεϊρέλες 15η θέση), «Ζώνη ενδιαφέροντος» (Αγγλία/ ΗΠΑ/ Πολωνία – σε γερμανική γλώσσα – Τζόναθαν Γκλέιζερ 12η θέση), «Ταξίδι στη Χώρα των θαυμάτων» (Ιαπωνία, Χαγιάο Μιγιαζάκι – κινούμενα σχέδια – 9η θέση), «Ερωτική επιθυμία» (Χονγκ Κονγκ/ Κίνα, Γουόνγκ Καρ Βάι, 4η θέση) και στην πρώτη, όπως είπαμε, τα «Παράσιτα».

Στην λίστα βρίσκεται και η ταινία του Γιώργου Λάνθιμου, η «Ευνοούμενη» στην 52η θέση, ενώ απουσιάζει το «Poor Things».

Σχετικά με τους κανόνες της επιλογής οι ταινίες θα έπρεπε να είναι ταινίες μεγάλου μήκους που κυκλοφόρησαν στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες από την 1η Ιανουαρίου 2000 και μετά.

Μεταξύ των ψηφοφόρων ήταν βραβευμένοι με Όσκαρ σκηνοθέτες όπως ο Πέδρο Αλμοδόβαρ (Γύρνα Πίσω), η Σοφία Κόπολα, ο Μπάρι Τζένκινς και ο Γκιγιέρμο ντελ Τόρο, καθώς και καταξιωμένοι ηθοποιοί όπως ο Τζον Τορτούρο, η Τζούλιαν Μουρ και η φετινή νικήτρια στην κατηγορία του Όσκαρ Α γυναικείου ρόλου, Μάικι Μάντισον.

Αφού έριξαν την ψήφο τους, οι ψηφοφόροι, σε μια σειρά από αναμετρήσεις που ακολούθησαν είχαν το δικαίωμα να επιλέξουν ποια από τις δύο τυχαία επιλεγμένες ταινίες ήταν καλύτερη.

Ακολούθησε ένας συνδυασμός των δεδομένων με τις καταμετρήσεις ψήφων και έτσι δημιουργήθηκε η λίστα με τις 100 κορυφαίες ταινίες.
